2008 – 2010

Liam 1 | Liam is my son, nine years old in this portrait, and showing all the spontaneity and exuberance of a kid outdoors on a sunny summer day. Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 18". Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase
Chuck | Acrylic on canvas, 18 x 36" Private collection. Prints available for purchase
Dad and Anita | Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 24". Private collection. Prints available for purchase
Dad | Acrylic on canvas, 18 x 36" Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase
Eve and Max | Eve is my younger sister. After Max was born, her focus turned completely to him. I’m not sure whose gaze of boundless love and adoration is stronger here, hers or his. Acrylic on canvas, 16 x 24" Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase
Jonathan and Max | Jonathan is Eve’s husband. When they came to visit with little Max, both he and Eve were completely absorbed in Max’s care. I painted him this way – turned toward Max, with his back to me – for that reason. Acrylic on canvas,, 22 x 28". Private collection. Prints available for purchase
Kalman and Dad | Can you tell they’re brothers? After all these years, they still dress the same, down to the pens in the pocket (always ready for an impromptu napkin sketch). Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 24", Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase
Betty | Betty is my mother-in-law, but I love her as my own. Betty is at her best when working her magic in the kitchen, and that’s where we’ve gotten to know each other. Betty talks with her hands, and punctuates her thoughts by clasping her fingers together at her chest. I never noticed this until I did the photo shoot for this painting. Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 24". Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase
Liam 2 | And here is Liam’s softer side -- totally happy, trying to hide it, and not quite succeeding. Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 18", Private collection. Prints available for purchase.
Linda and Marc | Linda is my older sister. I hope Linda and Marc will forgive me for this one – it’s not a very flattering portrait of either of them. But as soon as you have two people in a painting, it becomes a portrait of their relationship, rather than of each as an individual. And this is a portrait of a long, comfortable, happy marriage. They’re completely relaxed together, letting it all hang out, legs casually touching. Same posture, same facial expression, very aware of each other’s presence without having to acknowledge it. Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 36". Private collection. Prints available for purchase.
Nancy | Nancy is Rob’s sister. She inspires me in many ways – as an all-round creative spirit, as someone who can navigate the business side of the art world, and as a strong, positive thinker who can go through hell and come out smiling. Acrylic on canvas,18 x 24". Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase.
Rob and Laura | Rob and Laura often play and sing together at the piano after supper. This painting was the last of the series, and took the first tentative steps in a new direction. I wanted to peel myself away from realism and allow some abstraction into my work. Semi-abstraction seems to allow more room for creativity and expression, but getting there, for me, was a challenge. Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 24". Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase.
Rob | Rob is my husband, and I feel funny showing him in only in profile in this collection. Somehow, the occasion seems to call for a more intimate, gazing-right-into-his-eyes portrait. Maybe that’s still to come. Anyhow, I love him in this hat (and without the hat, and without anything at all, for that matter…). Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 18". Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase.
Self-Portrait | And this is me. I’ve tried to paint people in this series as I see them most, and the only time I ever really look at myself is in the bathroom mirror. So here I am, a bit tired and disheveled, in my favourite shirt and jeans. Acrylic on canvas, 28 x 32", Artist's collection. Prints available for purchase.
